The power was restored when Nash, Kinley, and Justice got back to the house. Nash had planned on having Justice work all day, but after spotting the laundry storefront and Cade at the quick stop, Nash had more pressing matters to attend to, so he sent the boy home early.
Kinley stood on the porch to watch Justice walk home and gave him a final wave before coming back inside. She closed the door and leaned against it, one eyebrow cocked and one fist planted on her hip. "Why'd you send him home so early?"
Could Nash avoid telling her everything he knew? With her insatiable desire to fix thingsâand peopleâshe would interrogate him until she had all the answers and a plan of attack. A fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants version of a plan anyway.
Nash shrugged. "He's been working hard, doing a good job. He should be able to enjoy his Saturday afternoon. You know, just be a kid."
Kinley's fist slid off her hip, and she tilted her chin, peering at him from beneath a thick fringe of lashes.
"What?" Of course she'd question his motives.
She prowled toward him like a lioness stalking her prey. "That was a really sweet thing for you to do. The whole day was. First waffles, then sending him home to play. What's going on?"
He took a step backwards. "I can be sweet when I want to be."
"So you've said." She slanted a look at him.
A knock sounded, and Nash scooted around her to the door. Irritation flared when he turned the lock and found Cade. "Nice of you to show up."
Cade's lazy grin was in place, as usual. "I'm sorry, man. Something came up that I had to take care of."
Nash grunted and held his place in the doorway.
"You gonna let me in?" Cade asked.
"Wasn't planning on it." Nash could feel Kinley's presence at his back and chose to ignore it. She could stay out of this. She didn't know everything Nash did about his rotten brother, and she didn't need to.
Cade still sported that infuriating smile. Nash wanted to wipe it clean off his face. "You're seriously going to throw me out because I was a little late?"
"And for plenty of other reasons." No way Nash was letting a drug addict work on the house. "Go home, Cade."
Kinley placed her hand on Nash's arm and poked her head into the argument. "Come on, boys. I'm sure we can work this out. Let's finish talking inside."
Nash reluctantly let her pull him aside, and Cade stepped into the house. Nash's frustration had already reached the boiling point, though. He couldn't stay here and listen to any more of his brother's lies. "You two do whatever you want. I'm out." He pushed past Cade and bolted out the door.
"Nash, wait," Kinley called after him.
He made it to the edge of the driveway before she caught up with him. She grabbed his arm, but he shrugged her off. "I know you think you're helping, but you're not. You don't understand."
"Then explain it to me.
